The Fleet is sending four to San Angelo, Texas - the site of the first Golden League vs. United League All-Star game. The four men representing the Armada next Tuesday in the All-Star game are starting pitchers Nick Bierbrodt and Rik Currier, 1B/DH/OF Norm Hutchins, and closer Nick Cavanaugh.
The four men were selected to the Golden Baseball League South Division All-Star squad, and each of them made the cut for the GBL's 2008 All-Star Team.
Bierbrodt has a 5.54 ERA and a 1-4 record in eight starts so far this season. He's scheduled to pitch for the Armada tonight (Saturday) against the Silver Sox in game two of this three-game series. In 52 innings pitches, he has accumulated 52 strike outs with a 1.61 WHIP.
In 39 games this season, Hutchins has hit .333 with 11 homeruns and 30 RBI. A natural outfielder, Hutchins made the transition to first base this season and has been stellar (one error). Throughout the season, Armada Manger Steve Yeager has used Hutchins not only on first but also in each position in the outfield.
Rik Currier has gone 4-4 in his eight starts this season. In his 46.1 innings pitched, the former USC standout has 53 strikeouts to only 26 walks with a 4.47 ERA. Not a shock that this starting pitcher/pitching coach has only given up three homeruns all season.
Nick Cavanaugh has filled the role of closer nicely for the Armada. He has appeared in 17 games, earning a team-leading 8 saves. He has struck out 17 batters in only 16.2 innings pitched while surrendering only six walks and zero homeruns. His 1.02 WHIP and 1.62 ERA explain why when Cavanaugh comes in to the game, the Armada's opponent doesn't have a great opportunity to get on the board.
