Armada 0 Scorpions 9

After a quick bus ride into Yuma, the Armada looked to continue their winning ways at Desert Sun Stadium. The Scorpions had other ideas as they shutout the Fleet giving Yuma their first shutout of the season as they won 9-0.

Armada starter Ryan Claypool (5-6) had a rough outing in Game 1. Claypool pitched 5 innings giving up 8 runs, 4 earned on 10 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3. Justin Segal came on in relief giving up one run in the sixth inning. Sean Buller and newly acquired right hander Wayne Foltin each went one inning giving up no runs.

CF Steve Moss (pictured left) got half of the Armada hits. Moss went 2 for 4 with a double. 2B Julian Williams went 1 for 4 with a triple. SS Michael Glomb went 1 for 3. Only four hits for the Armada in the first game. Rest assured the Fleet don't have games like this back-to-back.

Yuma starter Jorge Perez (6-2) went the distance giving up 4 hits, no runs, walking 1 and striking out 8. Perez was dealing from start to finish. 3B Henry Calderon went 3 for 4 with a double, 3 RBI and two runs scored. LF Rich Janeway went 2 for 4 with two triples and 2 RBI. Five runs scored in the second, three in the fourth and one in the sixth for Yuma.

Probable starters tomorrow for Long Beach Dusty Gober (4-5) and for Yuma TBA. Game time is at 7:05pm.

Runs were scored in bunches for the Armada in the first, third and seventh innings tonight. Another great performance from Jonathan Figueroa and the Armada bullpen gave them the first win in the four game series between these two at Blair Field. Edmonton vs. Calgary Brawl 2006

A great clip of a brawl between the Vipers and Cracker Cats back in 2006. Judging by this video clip, they still don't like each other now being in the Golden Baseball League. Thanks to Meggie from D.C. who was listening to the broadcasts and sent us this link. She is a Drew Miller fan who plays for the Calgary Vipers.

Armada 5 Vipers 3

Three nights in a row of great pitching. Blair Field has brought out the best of the pitchers the last three games. Timely hits in the very first inning gave the Armada the early lead and they would not let it go as they won 5-3 to take the series against the Vipers and await the Edmonton Cracker Cats.

The very first inning saw all the offense for Long Beach. 2B Cleatus Davidson started with a lead off HR over the left field wall into the street behind Blair Field. His first HR of the season. CF Steve Moss followed with his first double. RF Chris Klemm doubled in Moss. 1B Norm Hutchins singled, then 3B Brett Flowers drove in Klemm with a single. Hutchins and LF Dan Trumble would both steal home and second respectively after C David Ramirez struck out. RF Julian Williams singled in Trumble to finish off the scoring. All nine batters appeared in the first inning.

Thats all starter Dusty Gober (4-5) (pictured left) would need as he pitched a beauty going 7 innings giving 3 runs on 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3. Sean Buller pitched a scoreless eighth giving up 1 hit. Nick Cavanagh ended the night the leader in saves with his 11th on the season, giving up 1 hit and striking out 1.

The Vipers would score one in the third thanks to sac fly by RF Darryl Brinkley scoring CF Jorge Tang. They would add two more in the fourth thanks to DH Felix Jose doubling in LF Drew Miller after his double. Jose would later score on a throwing error by Flowers to first base. Vipers starter Joe Sergent (2-1) struggled early, but gave up no more runs after the first going 6 innings giving up 5 runs on 8 hits, striking out 3. Reggie Rivard and PJ Bevis combined to go 2 innings giving up 1 hit and striking out 3.

Probable starters tomorrow for Edmonton TBA and for Long Beach Jonathan Figueroa (3-0). Game time is 7:05pm at Blair Field.

We got another pitcher's duel tonight at Blair Field. Calgary was shut down for only a run after scoring six the previous night. The Armada end their five game losing streak and Calgary's seven game winning streak winning 3-1.

Klemm drove a solo HR off the right field scoreboard in the fourth. He drove in CF Steve Moss in the sixth inning. Klemm would finish 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Moss would finish 1 for 4 driving in a run and scoring a run.

Armada starter Ryan Claypool (5-5) pitched a gem going 7 innings giving up 1 run on 6 hits, walking 4 and striking out 4. Garrett Murdy pitched a scoreless eighth giving up 1 hit and striking out 1. Nick Cavanagh got his 10th save pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Vipers only run came in the fifth when 3B Travis Drader scored on Claypool's wild pitch. Drader finished 1 for 3 with a run scored. CF Colin Moro went 2 for 4. Eight runners were left on base for Calgary, five for Long Beach. Vipers starter Nathan Melek (4-3) got the loss pitching 5 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 2.

Each having at least ten punch outs and giving up no more than four runs. The Armada had a one run lead until the eighth inning when Calgary tied and later went ahead in the ninth to continue their now seven game win streak. Eight runners were left on base for the Armada to only four to Calgary. Five errors did not help the Fleet either. RF Chris Klemm and CF Steve Moss went 2 for 5. Klemm drove in a run, while Moss scored a run. 1B Norm Hutchins went 2 for 3 driving in a run in the first. 2B Cleatus Davidson and SS Michael Glomb went 1 for 4, each driving in a run in the second.

Armada 1 Flyers 4

Complete opposite in the second game of the doubleheader at Blair Field. The Armada won a pitchers duel 4-2 in game one and the Flyers won the pitcher duel in game two. The Fleet had the lead 1-0 until a four run sixth for the Flyers gave them the lead for good as they won 4-1 winning their first game of the second half (1-3). Long Beach goes down for the first time in the second half (3-1).

The Orange County bats woke up with all four of their runs coming late in the game. 1B Fernando Pacheco and RF Jeff Van Houten each drove in a run for the Flyers in the sixth inning. 2B Jermy Acey, DH Patrick Breen, 3B Jeff LaRue and Pacheco would each come across the plate in the sixth. CF Travon Jackson went 2 for 3. LaRue also went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

The pitching was outstanding for both sides again in game two. Flyers starter Bob Cramer (3-2) pitched his fourth complete game of the season going all seven innings giving up 1 unearned run on 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 8. Armada starter Ryan Claypool (4-5) pitched great himself going 5 innings giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3. Justin Segal came on in relief pitching 2 innings giving up 2 unearned runs on 2 hits.

Only three hits total for the Fleet as they fell short to Orange County. SS Michael Glomb scored on Moss's single in the third after stealing second for his eleventh steal in just his sixteenth professional game for Long Beach.

Armada 4 Flyers 2

A great start for the Armada in Game 1 of the doubleheader. It was a pitcher's duel as was expected at Blair Field between Andre Simpson of Orange County and Rik Currier of Long Beach. Simpson went the distance, six innings (doubleheaders go 7 innings in the GBL), and Currier went six for the W as Long Beach wins 4-2 improving their second half record to 3-0. OC falls to 0-3 in the second half.

The bats for Orange County got to Currier quickly in the first, but that was the only time they would get to him. 2B Jermy Acey and 3B Jeff LaRue would drive in the only runs for the Flyers and RF Travon Jackson would add the only other hit going 1 for 3 with a run scored. Simpson (8-3) got the loss going a complete game 6 innings giving up 4 runs, 3 earned on 8 hits, walking 2 and striking out 10.

The Armada bats awoke in the second and third thanks to a solo HR by Ryan Lehr in the second and his base hit RBI in the third. C Octavio Martinez drove a run in the third and fifth. Lehr finished 3 for 3 a triple shy of the cycle with two runs scored. Martinez went 2 for 3 with two RBI's. Martinez, who left in the sixth, is day-to-day with a strained groin muscle trying to steal second in the fifth. DH Chris Klemm went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Currier (5-4) is still undefeated at Blair Field. He went 6 innings giving up 2 runs, 1 earned on 3 hits, walking 3 and striking out 8. Nick Cavanagh is now the saves leader getting number 9 striking out 2.

Armada 3 Flyers 6

The Armada threatened late, but it was not enough as the Flyers, who scored six runs in the first two innings, to go on to a 6-3 victory over rival Long Beach. Long Beach now finishes the first half at .500 22-22 overall. Orange County's record extends to 28-15.

Armada starter Dusty Gober (3-4) didn't have a bad start even though he got the loss. All his runs were given up in the first and second, but after he shut down the Flyers for 6 innings giving up 6 runs on 11 hits, walking 3 and striking out 5. Garrett Murdy and Sean Buller combined to go 3 innings giving up 2 hits, walking 3 and striking out 1.

The Armada bats came to life in the eighth scoring two, but stranded two runners in the inning. 1B Norm Hutchins drove in a run and DH Brett Flowers walked in another to cut the Flyer lead to three. 2B Julian Williams drove in a run in the fourth. CF Steve Moss, Hutchins, 3B Ryan Lehr and C David Ramirez all went 2 for 4 for the Fleet. They left eight runners on base.

The Flyers got a great start out of starter Charles Merricks (5-1) who won his fifth game. He went 7 innings giving up 1 run on 7 hits, walking 2 and striking out 6. CF Patrick Breen drove in four of the six runs thanks to his two RBI double in the first and two run HR in the second. He finished 2 for 5 with four RBI and two runs scored. SS David Bacani was 3 for 3 with two runs scored. 2B Jermy Acey and 1B Fernando Pacheco would each drive in a run for Orange County. Dane De La Rosa got his fifth save pitching the ninth striking out two.

Probable starters tomorrow for Orange County Jesse Smith (2-0) and for Long Beach Jonathan Figueroa (2-0). Game time is at 7:05pm.

GBL lose inagural All-Star game vs. United League

SAN ANGELO, Texas – His teammate in Laredo had just gone deep off the clubhouse to give the United League a 4-2 lead, but Luany Sanchez was ready to one-up Dwayne White, just has he had done in their first at-bats. In the second inning, White doubled before Sanchez followed with a three-run homer to left-center, and this time, in the fourth inning, Sanchez launched the first pitch he saw from Bob Cramer over the left-field clubhouse to give the United League a 5-2 lead. The ULB All-Stars went on from there to win the first ever United League-Golden League All-Star Game, 8-5, in front of a sellout crowd of 4,421 at Foster Field.

Sanchez, of the Laredo Broncos, won MVP honors, with his two homers and four RBIs, and also picked off a batter to end a potential GBL rally in the second inning. White, also of Laredo, had two hits for ULB, as did Bryan Frichter of the hometown San Angelo Colts.

The Golden League got on the board first, scoring off starter Santo Hernandez of Laredo. With one out, Ryan Stevenson of St. George tripled just past Frichter in deep center, and was brought home on a single by Joe Jiannetti of Edmonton. The GBL All-Stars threatened again in the second off eventual winning pitcher Micah Posey of Amarillo, but a 4-6-3 double play to erase a leadoff single by former Major Leaguer and current St. George Roadrunners catcher Wiki Gonzalez, and Sanchez’s pick-off at first of David Bacani of Orange County with two outs and two on prevented the Golden League from scoring.

In the bottom of the second, the host league took the lead for good. With one out, Andres Rodriguez, the Home Run Derby champion from San Angelo, singled, and then White doubled to right and Sanchez launched a homer to left off starter and losing pitcher Even Greusel of Calgary to make it 3-1.

After the GBL got one back in the third on an unearned run off Laredo’s Gregorio Martinez, the ULB added to their lead on the back-to-back homers from White and Sanchez in the fourth. The Golden League drew closer again in the seventh, but another double play induced by ULB pitcher Luke Massetti of San Angelo wiped away a potentially larger rally. With no outs and runners on second and third, Jiannetti hit a grounder to short, which brought home a run. But Stevenson, the runner at second, tried to go to third on the throw from Alexandria shortstop Rafael Ozuna, and he slipped, allowing Ozuna to eventually tag him out in a rundown. Massetti then struck out Patrick Breen of Orange County to end the inning.

The United League responded with a run in the bottom half, as Ozuna was ruled to have scored ahead of a double play on the basepaths, as Bryan Sabatella of Alexandria was doubled off first on a sacrifice fly by his Aces teammate Luis Guance.

The Golden League got two more unearned runs in the eighth to again make it a one-run game, but Edinburg’s Julio Castro got a foul out from Jermy Acey of Orange County to end the inning with the tying run at third. ULB got those two back again in the bottom half, on the second back-to-back home runs of the night, solo shots from Danny Bravo of Amarillo and Palmer Karr of Alexandria. In all, the ULB stars hit five homers, accounting for seven of the eight runs.

The Aces’ Juan Carlos Ovalles finished things up, working around a leadoff walk in the ninth to pick up the save. On the final play, the third baseman Bravo knocked down a hard smash but recovered in time to throw out Orange County’s Mark Okano to end the game.

After this year’s contest, the two leagues are scheduled to renew acquaintances in next year’s All-Star Game in Orange County, California.

Armada 0 Silver Sox 5

The Armada came out before the All-Star break looking to extend their win streak to four games. The Silver Sox had other plans though as they put on a pitching and defensive show shutting down the Armada for a 5-0 victory. Reno extends their overall record to 17-26 and Long Beach falls to 22-21 before the break.

Andrew Layfield (0-2) pitched well in his first start, but got the loss going 5 innings giving up 3 runs on 7 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1. Ryan Claypool came into relief for 4 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits, walking 1 and striking out 2. DH Chris Klemm went 2 for 4, C Octavio Martinez, 2B Julian Williams and SS Michael Glomb would each get a hit. Long Beach was kept quiet for 5 total hits.

Reno would send out six pitchers to five hit the Armada on Sunday. Jesse Hall (5-3) who did not start the game would win it pitching 2 innings giving up 1 hit and striking out 1. SS Andre Alvarado went 2 for 3 driving in two and scoring a run. RF Ross McCoy would drive in a run and score two. All-Star C DJ Dixon went 2 for 4 and so did DH Juan Senreiso who also scored a run.

P Nick Bierbrodt, P Rik Currier, P Nick Cavanagh, 1B Norm Hutchins and C DJ Dixon now move on to Tuesday's All-Star Game at San Angelo, Texas against the United League All-Stars. Game time is at 5:20pm. The Armada are back in action on Thursday July 17 against the hated ones, The OC Flyers at Blair Field. Game time is at 7:05pm.

Armada 7 Silver Sox 1

The runs came in bunches for the Armada in the fifth and sixth innings tonight. Four in the fifth and three in the sixth. The pitching was just as good as the Fleet extend their win streak to three and improve their overall record to 22-20. Reno drops to 16-26 in the North Division.

Starter Nick Bierbrodt (2-4) got the win pitching a great game going 7 innings giving up 5 hits walking 2 and striking out 12. What a way to go into the All-Star game for Nick. Dusty Gober and Sean Buller combined to go 2 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3. The bats awoke in the fifth breaking up Reno starter Gustavo Vasquez's perfect game. SS Cleatus Davidson drove in two thanks to his triple. He finished the day 2 for 3 and scoring a run. Rookie 3B Michael Glomb would drive in two. 1B Brett Flowers and 2B Julian Williams would each drive in a run as well.

Reno starter Gustavo Vasquez (0-1) was perfect going into the fifth in his GBL debut, but got the loss pitching 4 2/3 innings giving up 4 runs, 2 earned on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 6. Reno's only run came off the bat of All-Star C DJ Dixon in the eighth to score LF Ross McCoy. 3B Carlos Madrid went 3 for 5 with two doubles.

Probable starters for tomorrow's game for Reno TBA and for Long Beach Andrew Layfield (0-1) which will be his first start of the season. Game time is at 5:05pm.

Armada All-Stars

The Fleet is sending four to San Angelo, Texas - the site of the first Golden League vs. United League All-Star game. The four men representing the Armada next Tuesday in the All-Star game are starting pitchers Nick Bierbrodt and Rik Currier, 1B/DH/OF Norm Hutchins, and closer Nick Cavanaugh.

The four men were selected to the Golden Baseball League South Division All-Star squad, and each of them made the cut for the GBL's 2008 All-Star Team.

Bierbrodt has a 5.54 ERA and a 1-4 record in eight starts so far this season. He's scheduled to pitch for the Armada tonight (Saturday) against the Silver Sox in game two of this three-game series. In 52 innings pitches, he has accumulated 52 strike outs with a 1.61 WHIP.

In 39 games this season, Hutchins has hit .333 with 11 homeruns and 30 RBI. A natural outfielder, Hutchins made the transition to first base this season and has been stellar (one error). Throughout the season, Armada Manger Steve Yeager has used Hutchins not only on first but also in each position in the outfield.

Rik Currier has gone 4-4 in his eight starts this season. In his 46.1 innings pitched, the former USC standout has 53 strikeouts to only 26 walks with a 4.47 ERA. Not a shock that this starting pitcher/pitching coach has only given up three homeruns all season.

Nick Cavanaugh has filled the role of closer nicely for the Armada. He has appeared in 17 games, earning a team-leading 8 saves. He has struck out 17 batters in only 16.2 innings pitched while surrendering only six walks and zero homeruns. His 1.02 WHIP and 1.62 ERA explain why when Cavanaugh comes in to the game, the Armada's opponent doesn't have a great opportunity to get on the board.

Armada 2 Silver Sox 1

It was a pitcher's duel tonight at Blair Field for game one. Both starting pitchers would not give in as the score would indicate. The Armada ride a two game winning streak into Game 2 as they improve their overall record to 21-20 and Reno's record now stands at 16-25 with the Fleet winning 2-1.

Armada starter Jonathan Figueroa (2-0) in only his second start this season pitched a beauty. In his first start he went 5 innings giving up no runs to the Calgary Vipers for his first win. Today was even better. 7 innings pitched giving up only 4 hits and striking out 9. Justin Segal came in the eighth inning striking out 2 and Nick Cavanagh got save number 8 in the ninth. How did the Dodgers let Figueroa go? (He last played for Single A Great Lakes Loons, Dodgers affiliate).

Reno starter Steve Russell (3-6) was just as good as Figueroa. He unfortunately got the loss, going 7 innings giving up 1 run on 2 hits while walking 2 and striking out 8. With numbers like that, 99 percent of the time it's a win. Reno reliever Derrick Landavazo pitched the eighth giving up 1 run on a hit and striking out 2.

LF Dan "Double" Trumble had himself a ball game. True to his nickname both his hits were doubles as he went 2 for 4 driving in the first run and scoring the go ahead run in the eighth. Reno All-Star C DJ Dixon went 1 for 3 sac flying in the only run in the ninth.

Probable starters for tomorrow's game for Reno Gustavo Vasquez and for Long Beach Nick Bierbrodt (1-4). Game time is 7:05pm at ibnsports.com and the Long Beach Armada radio network.

Armada 5 Cracker Cats 2

It's sad to see this series end. Every pitch of every inning was breathtaking. After losing last night 9-4, the Armada came back tonight early scoring 5 runs in the first three innings. Great pitching as well propelled the Fleet to a 5-2 victory.

LF Dan Trumble lead off the first on the first pitch he saw for a solo HR to left. "Double" Trumble would finish the day 2 for 4 driving in 3 and scoring one. RF Julian Williams would sac fly in a run in the third inning. 3B Ryan Lehr went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Starter Rik Currier (4-4) got the win. All his wins have come at Blair Field. He went 6 innings giving up 2 runs, 1 earned on 5 hits while walking 6 and striking out 10. Andrew Layfield and Nick Cavanaugh combine to go 3 innings giving up 2 hits and striking out 2. Cavanaugh got his 7th save.

Edmonton starter Chris Malone (0-1) got his first loss going 6 innings giving up 5 runs, 4 earned on 7 hits while walking 3 and striking out 6. DH Marcus Nettles went 1 for 3 driving in and scoring a run. 3B/1B Jose Morban went 2 for 3 driving in a run. Edmonton's record falls to 22-22 as they travel back to Canada to face the rival Calgary Vipers before the All-Star break. Long Beach awaits the Reno Silver Sox for a three game series at Blair Field before the break.

Probable starters for tomorrow's game for Reno TBA and for Long Beach Jonathan Figueroa (1-0). Game time is 7:05pm.

Armada 4 Cracker Cats 9

Edmonton would grab the lead early and not let it go. Four and two runs were dropped on the Armada in the second and third innings respectively. The Armada would score two in the bottom of the third, but that was as close as they would get to the Cracker Cats as Edmonton stops Long Beach and improve their record to 22-21. The Armada now are one game below .500 at 19-20.

Armada starter Dusty Gober (3-3) was rocked early in the game. He pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up 9 runs, 4 earned on 12 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. The bats stayed silent for the most part. RF Norm Hutchins smashed a solo HR in the ninth and finished 3 for 4. LF Dan Trumble went 1 for 4 with a RBI. 2B Cleatus Davidson tripled in a run going 2 for 3. SS Michael Glomb would drive in a run as well.

Edmonton starter Eric Van Slyke (4-3) got the win pitching 7 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 8. The Cats bats were rockin lead by CF Kevin House. House went 4 for 5 with 4 RBI's and a run scored. SS Orlando Miller would drive in two while scoring three. LF Marcus Nettles and DH Ruddy Yan would each drive in a run.

Probable starters for tomorrow's game for Edmonton Carwin Malone (0-0) and for Long Beach Rik Currier (3-4). Game time is 7:05pm.

Armada 7 Cracker Cats 4

Another fantastic game between these two ball clubs of the GBL. Edmonton trailed by three going into the fifth when they would tie it up. It wouldn't last as the Armada took back the lead that same inning and would not let it go winning their second straight against Edmonton 7-4.

The lead was taken back in the fifth when CF Steve Moss crushed a two run homer over the left field wall to extend the lead to 5-3. Newcomers Brett Flowers and Michael Glomb would drive in the two insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Moss finished the game 1 for 3 with a HR, 2 RBI and two runs scored. Flowers went 4 for 5 with a RBI and a run scored. He's 7 for 10 in this series against Edmonton. Glomb went 2 for 4 with a RBI.

Armada starter Ryan Claypool (4-4) got the win going 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 6 hits while walking 2 and striking out 6. The save, his second going to Justin Segal, who went 2 innings striking out 2. Edmonton starter Nicholas Peterson (1-3) got the loss going 5 2/3 innings giving up 5 runs on 8 hits while walking 6 and striking out 5.

1B Jose Morban would tie the game in the fifth with his 3 RBI triple and CF Ruddy Yan would sac fly in a run in the seventh. Morban went 1 for 4 with 3 RBI. Yan went 1 for 3 with a RBI and a run scored. C Jon Pasieka went 2 for 4.

Probable starters for tomorrows game for Edmonton Eric Van Slyke (3-3) and for Long Beach Dusty Gober (3-2). Game time is 7:05pm.

Armada 8 Cracker Cats 7

It was an exciting game from start to finish here at Blair Field. The fleet came back to score five runs in the third after giving up four to Edmonton in the same inning. The Cats would score three more to go up by two until the eighth and ninth when the Armada scored three to win the game 8-7.

Sixteen hits were recorded for Long Beach. Three of them by recently acquired 1B Brett Flowers who went 3 for 5 with a run scored. 2B Cleatus Davidson sac flied a run in the eighth. Norm Hutchins pinch hit a double of the left field wall and LF Dan "Double" Trumble true to his nickname doubled in Norm to tie the ball game. 2B Julian Williams who pinch ran in the eighth, came to bat in the ninth with two runners on and drove a ball over 2B Ruddy Yan's head into right to score the winning run DH Tony Torcato.

Armada starter Nick Bierbrodt went 6 innings giving up 7 runs on 6 hits while walking 6 and striking out 5. Closer Nick Cavanaugh (1-0) got the win after shutting down Edmonton in the ninth striking out 2. Edmonton starter Ricardo Rodriguez went 7 innings giving up 5 runs, 3 earned on 11 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. Reliever Joel Schmal (0-5) got the loss as the winning run was charged to him and the hit given up by reliever Robert Coello in the ninth.

All-Star Joe Jiannetti went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's on two doubles. 2B Ruddy Yan scored three runs. 3B Orlando Miller and RF Carlos Arroyo each had 2 RBI's apiece. Probable starters tomorrow for Long Beach Ryan Claypool (3-4) and for Edmonton Nick Peterson (1-2). Game time is 7:05pm.

LB 6, OC 3

Fullerton, Calif -- Starting pitcher Dusty Gober pitched six strong innings, and the Armada offense kept one step ahead of the Flyers all night for a 6-3 Long Beach win at Goodwin Field on Thursday.

Armada CF Steve Moss blasted the first pitch he saw over the centerfield wall for a solo HR and a 1-0 Long Beach lead.  Moss finished the evening 2 for 5 with 2 RBI and one spectacular leaping catch to end the 5th inning.

The Flyers evened things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first when OC's Pat Breen singled to drive in Mark Okano.  One batter later, Flyers SS Dave Bacani got caught up on the base path between third and home after Gober tried to catch Breen stealing second.  As Bacani sprinted toward the plate, Armada 2B Cleatus Davidson fired the ball to C Octavio Martinez.  Bacani smashed into Octavio who fell over but held onto the ball for the out.  After that play, the Flyers failed to threaten again until the sixth inning.

Gober retired 13 straight Flyers from the end of the first inning through that final out of the fifth, wracking up six strikeouts in that time.  He finished the night with 6 innings pitched, giving up 2 runs (both earned) and 4 hits while striking out six, walking one and hitting one batter in 79 pitches.

The Armada scored two more in the fifth inning to get the offense going.  Davidson reached on a single to right field, and two batters later Moss drove him in.  Trumble also scored in the frame for the 3-1 Armada advantage.

In the sixth, 1B Tony Torcato singled to bring in DH Norm Hutchins for what would prove to be the night's winning run.

Sean Buller pitched the seventh and eighth innings in relief of Gober, giving up only one hit to the nine batters he faced.  Closer Nick Cavanaugh pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to record his sixth save of 2008.

The Fleet added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth when Bacani committed his second and third errors of the game.  Davidson walked to lead off the inning, and two batters later LF Dan Trumble reached on Bacani's first error.  RF Chris Klemm hit a hard grounder to Bacani, who overthrew the first baseman, allowing both Davidson and Trumble to secure the Armada win.

Moss HR

Welcome back, Steve Moss.

He just crushed a solo HR on the first pitch he saw. 1-0 LB Top 1.

I don't think his shoulder is bothering anymore.

Armada 4 Flyers 7

The rivalry has now entered Orange County and the first place Flyers came out on top in the first game of a double header 7-4 over the Armada. The Flyers ended their 3 game losing streak and extend their record to 22-9. Long Beach has now lost two in a row and overall 14-17.

Long Beach native Nick Bierbrodt (1-4) started the game striking out 3 of the first 5 batters faced. Unfortunately, the third inning was not his best. Giving up a 3 run home run to 2B Jermy Acey. Followed by a RBI double by C Josh Arhart. Nick would go 4 innings of a 7 inning game giving up 6 runs on 7 hits, walking 4 and striking out 4.

The offense for the Armada started slow, but came on in the seventh. A solo home run by Dan "Double" Trumble in the fifth, RBI double by 1B Brett Flowers in the sixth and two runs came across in the seventh thanks to doubles by RF Chris Klemm and CF Steve Moss.

Flyers starter Jesse Smith (1-0) got his first victory going six innings giving up 2 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 4. Game 2 is under way at about 8pm on the Long Beach Armada radio network.
