Armada 8 Flyers 4


The second half of the season officially got off to a great start for the Armada. Dropping eight runs on the rival Flyers of Orange County. The game was tied 3-3 at one point until a three run fourth inning gave Long Beach the lead for good as they went on to win 8-4 starting the second half 1-0.

The Armada struck first in the very first inning with 1B Norm Hutchins RBI single to drive in CF Steve Moss. SS Michael Glomb and LF Dan Trumble would drive in a run in the second to give the Fleet a 3-1 lead. The game was tied going into the fourth when "Double" Trumble drove a three run HR deep over the left field wall to give Long Beach a 6-3 lead. 2B Julian Williams would add two more runs thanks to his two RBI triple in the seventh. Trumble went 1 for 3 driving in four and scoring once. Williams finished the day 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Glomb had a great game going 3 for 4 with a RBI, run scored and three steals. Yes, three steals, two in the same inning.

Long Beach starter Jonathan Figueroa (3-0) pitched another beauty going 6 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, walking 3 and striking out 8. Those were his first runs given up in three starts. Andrew Layfield and Justin Segal combined to go 3 innings giving up 1 unearned run on 1 hit, walking 1 and striking out 4.

Flyers starter Jesse Smith (2-1) got his first loss of the season going 5 innings giving up 6 runs, 5 earned on 9 hits, walking 2 and striking out 2. SS David Bacani had another great game going 3 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored. DH Jeff LaRue and C Buddy Morales would each drive in a run. RF Jeffrey Van Houten went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Triple Crown threat CF Patrick Breen was kept quiet going 0 for 3 with a run scored.

Probable starters tomorrow for Long Beach Nick Bierbrodt (2-4) and for Orange County Jeremy Zick (3-3). Game time is 7:05pm at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California home of the Flyers.
