The Armada got the help they needed from Edmonton and Chico to jump into first place in the division. The Yuma Scorpions had other ideas. Yuma chipped away at Armada starter Dusty Gober for a 3-8 Armada loss at Desert Sun Stadium on Friday night.
The Yuma Scorpions (19-16) used a two-run first inning to take a lead they would not relinquish, spoiling an opportunity for the Armada to take over first place in the GBL South Division. While the Edmonton Cracker Cats defeated Orange County 12-4 and the Chico Outlaws clobbered St. George 17-8, Long Beach (20-16) could not capitalize to move into first. The Armada did not score a run until the sixth inning when 3B Ryan Lehr drove in SS Omar Bramasco to make it a 5-1 game.
Gober (4-8) took the loss for Long Beach, going eight innings, giving up eight runs on 12 hits while striking out eight Scorpions while giving up no walks. Armada C Octavio Martinez scored the Fleet’s other two runs in the seventh and ninth innings, but by that time the Scorpions had a big enough cushion to hold on for the win.
Yuma SP Jorge Perez (8-3) continued to show why he leads the GBL in strikeouts, as he fanned nine and walked only two in seven innings of work. Perez gave up five hits before leaving the game.
Yuma LF Rich Janeway led the way for the Scorpions, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Armada looks to bounce back tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 6pm. Hear all the action at www.longbeacharmada.com live from Yuma starting at 5:50pm.
