Armada 5 Flyers 1

The magic number for the Armada is five now. With a one game lead over St. George, a game and a half over Orange County and three and a half over Yuma the Fleet control their destiny for a postseason berth. They scored first and would only let the Flyers come within one to finish them off 5-1 with five games left all against the OC Flyers.

Armada starter Andrew Layfield (2-4) pitched a great game going 5 innings giving up 1 run on 5 hits and walking 1. Dusty Gober pitched two innings in relief giving up 2 hits and striking out 2. Nick Cavanagh pitched the eighth and ninth innings giving up 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out 2. Pitching and defense have been the key all year long for the Armada, as well as timely hitting like we saw today.

CF Steve Moss (pictured left) drove in RF Julian Williams in the first on a ground out to second. 1B Brett Flowers would drive in Moss on a base hit to right in the fourth extending the lead 2-0. With the Fleet up 2-1 going into the seventh, Long Beach could use some insurance runs against the Flyers. Moss would come to the plate with two runners on and drive a ball into left field for a 2 run single, but advanced to second on 1B Fernando Pacheco's fielding error. Two outs and 3B Ryan Lehr stepped in and promptly drove a ball into right to drive in Moss for a 5-1 lead and later the win.

Flyers starter Bob Cramer (7-4) went 7 innings giving up 5 runs, 4 earned on 10 hits, walking 2 and striking out 7. Andre Simpson pitched the eighth giving up 1 hit and striking out 1. The only run for the Flyers came in the fifth down 2-0, with CF Travon Jackson driving a ball into right to score C Josh Arhart from third. The Flyers had nine hits, but left eight on base.

Probable starters Thursday for Long Beach Game 1 & 2 TBA and for Orange County TBA. Game time is 5:05pm for Game 1.
