Armada 4 Scorpions 3

If you thought last night was a wild one, tonight's was even better. Another close one came down to the wire with clutch hits and a play at the plate in the ninth inning! The game was tied until the eighth when Long Beach scored on an error by Yuma to go on for the victory 4-3.

Armada starter Jonathan Figueroa (5-0) got his fifth win for the Fleet pitching 7 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 4. Nick Bierbrodt pitched in relief going 1 1/3 innings giving up 1 hit and 1 walk. Nick Cavanagh got his league leading 12th save pitching the ninth striking out 1.

The Fleet had timely hitting and fantastic defense in this one. 3B Ryan Lehr made a diving play to stop a base hit for Yuma. RF Norm Hutchins made a running catch at the right field line. LF Dan Trumble (pictured left) made a diving catch to his right in left and gunned down 2B Hector Bernal (pinch running in the ninth with one out) at home plate to secure the lead for the Armada.

Lehr finished the game 2 for 4 as did Hutchins with two runs scored. C Octavio Martinez with the tag at home of Bernal from Trumble also had himself a game with his bat. He went 2 for 4 with a double and a 2 run HR. 1B Brett Flowers and 2B Julian Williams both went 1 for 3.

Yuma starter Mike Esposito pitched a no decision going 7 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 2. Reliever Jean Carlos Guillen (3-1) gave up the unearned run in the eighth to get his first loss of the season. Yuma 3B Henry Calderon went 1 for 3 with a 2 run HR in the first. 2B Yosvany Almario went 3 for 4 with a run scored. DH Jose Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with a RBI.

Probable starters tomorrow for Long Beach Andrew Layfield (0-3) and for Yuma TBA. Game time is at 6:05pm.

Fun game to watch. Close, and some quality plays. That diving catch by Trumble in left was so good that a lot of people in the Yuma crowd were clapping in recognition of a great play. I hope the internet video feed captured that catch. I have to drive back Sunday so I won't be catching the game in El Centro on Sunday. I will eventually get around to posting pictures I took at the Friday & Saturday games (a few advance photos will be posted Sunday evening).
